Health Minister Announces Enhanced Rabies Prevention Measures

Algiers, December 11, 2025 – The Ministry of Health has announced a series of specific measures aimed at preventing and controlling rabies across the country. Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messoudane revealed these initiatives in response to questions posed at the Council of the Nation earlier today.

Minister Ait Messoudane stated that the Ministry is committed to combating the disease through several key actions. These include ensuring the availability of rabies vaccines and serums at all health institutions, guaranteeing citizens have access to immediate treatment should they be exposed to the risk of infection. Furthermore, the Ministry will implement continuous training programs for medical and paramedical staff on the proper management of rabies cases. Public awareness campaigns will also be organized to educate citizens about the disease and preventative measures.

The Minister emphasized that Algerian healthcare facilities are fully equipped to manage rabies cases according to internationally recognized treatment protocols. This includes providing immediate first aid to those infected, administering anti-rabies vaccines, and, in severe cases, utilizing serum for rapid response. Ait Messoudane also highlighted the importance of proactive prevention strategies.

He stressed the need to raise awareness among pet owners about the dangers of rabies, encouraging responsible pet ownership through vaccination and adherence to safety protocols when in public spaces. He further urged municipalities to establish shelters for stray dogs and cats, implement proper waste management practices to avoid attracting stray animals, and adhere to the guidelines outlined in the regulatory texts concerning rabies prevention and control.
