FIFA Disrupts Petkovic’s Plans, Mbappe Decision Delayed

DZWatch Exclusive: The Algerian national team’s preparation plans, including training camps and friendly matches, have been thrown into disarray following recent decisions by FIFA. The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) apparent deference to European clubs has further complicated matters for coach Vladimir Petkovic.

Initially, clubs were expected to release players for international duty starting December 8th, allowing for a two-week preparation period. However, under pressure from European clubs, FIFA revised the release date to December 15th, just six days before the start of the competition. Some players may even be delayed until December 18th.

This significantly curtailed preparation time, coupled with CAF’s requirement for teams to arrive before the competition’s commencement, leaves Petkovic with minimal opportunity for meaningful training. Sources indicate that Petkovic may forgo any friendly matches, opting instead for recovery sessions and two limited tactical training sessions before traveling to Morocco.

This situation has sparked considerable frustration, with both CAF and FIFA facing criticism for their handling of the scheduling conflict. Critics argue that CAF’s decision to hold the tournament in winter, allegedly due to infrastructure issues in Morocco, further exacerbated the problem. FIFA’s subsequent approval, despite a congested football calendar, and its failure to protect African teams’ interests by allowing European clubs to retain players, have been widely condemned.

While European clubs are naturally protective of their players, the primary responsibility for this debacle lies with CAF President Patrice Motsepe and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Mbappe Decision Postponed

As is often the case with dual-nationality players, renewed speculation has emerged regarding Ethan Mbappe’s potential to represent Algeria. Mbappe’s recent strong performances have reignited discussions about his international future. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is expected to address the matter at a later date.
