Algiers – Algeria and Tunisia have solidified their commitment to enhanced cooperation with a series of new agreements aimed at streamlining the movement of passengers and goods between the two nations.
The Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Sayoud, held a bilateral meeting with his Tunisian counterpart, Rachid Ammari, to assess existing partnership projects and activate cooperative mechanisms in international passenger and freight transport. Senior officials from both countries were present at the meeting.
The meeting emphasized the importance of developing land connectivity between Algeria and Tunisia. A new trade agreement was signed between Algeria’s National Economic University Transportation and Services Company and its Tunisian counterpart for intercity transport. This agreement will initially reinstate routes between Algiers and Tunis, and Annaba and Tunis.
Future phases will include the opening of additional routes connecting El Oued and Gafsa, and Tebessa and Sousse via Kasserine.
Both parties agreed on several measures to strengthen integration in the transport sector, including:
- Reinforcing the railway link between the two countries and rehabilitating problem areas along the route to reduce travel times and improve safety conditions.
- Studying the expansion of maritime transport for passengers and goods, reactivating the joint maritime committee to monitor projects and propose practical solutions.
- Organizing a meeting of civil aviation authorities to discuss operational and technical cooperation matters, including aircraft maintenance, pilot training, and improved coordination between approved airlines in both countries.
Minister Sayoud stressed Algeria’s commitment to practically implementing the agreements, reflecting a shared desire to enhance bilateral cooperation, improve the quality of transport services, and facilitate the movement of people and goods between Algeria and Tunisia. DZWatch will continue to monitor developments on this important initiative.
