Lavrov: Moscow, Washington Aim for Ukraine Crisis Resolution

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Thursday that ongoing negotiations between Moscow and Washington primarily aim to achieve a lasting resolution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Speaking at a roundtable dedicated to discussing solutions to the Ukrainian crisis, Lavrov explained that Russia is seeking a package of agreed-upon documents that would guarantee a sustainable and long-term peace agreement, while also providing security guarantees for all parties involved.

He added that Moscow believes that the U.S. President is serious about his efforts to mediate a peace agreement. However, he noted that some European countries are allegedly attempting to undermine these efforts.

The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized the need to address the “root causes” of the conflict, stating, “We insist on concluding a set of agreements that will establish a lasting peace with security guarantees for all countries concerned, and our talks with the U.S. President and his team are specifically focused on finding a long-term solution that ends the main causes of this crisis.”

Lavrov also reiterated his country’s opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), stressing that this option is “unacceptable for Russia.” Russia maintains that NATO expansion poses a direct threat to its national security. The discussions between Moscow and Washington are expected to continue in the coming weeks, with both sides expressing a commitment to de-escalating tensions and finding a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict.

The pursuit of a comprehensive agreement remains the central focus of the negotiations, with Moscow emphasizing the importance of addressing the underlying issues that have fueled the crisis.
