Algeria Denies Allegations of Mercenary Units in Sahel Region

The Algerian Ministry of National Defense has strongly refuted allegations regarding the establishment of mercenary units operating in the Sahel region. In a statement released today, the ministry dismissed the claims as baseless and malicious fabrications intended to tarnish Algeria’s reputation both regionally and internationally.

The statement asserted that certain media outlets and online platforms are actively disseminating false narratives and poorly conceived scenarios, concocted by their own imagination and that of their patrons. These narratives, according to the ministry, include unfounded information about Algeria forming mercenary units tasked with carrying out clandestine operations in the Sahel.

The Ministry of National Defense emphasized that the Algerian People’s National Army conducts its duties in full compliance with the constitution and laws of the Republic. Its actions are guided by Algeria’s consistent policy and principles, which prioritize good neighborliness, respect for the sovereignty of nations, non-interference in internal affairs, and the use of dialogue and negotiation to resolve crises.

“Algeria, an integral part of the Sahel region sharing the same destiny and interests, would never be a party to destabilizing it,” the statement declared. “On the contrary, Algeria is constantly striving to contribute to the economic and social development of the region’s inhabitants, upholding the principle of solidarity and honoring the historical and humanitarian ties that bind it to the peoples of the Sahel.”

The ministry further stressed that Algeria will not tolerate being questioned about its commitment to combating terrorism. It affirmed that these vile propaganda campaigns, fueled by rumors and fake news, will not achieve their malicious goals and will not be able to undermine Algeria’s pivotal role in the region as a key player in promoting peace and stability.

“These are poorly executed fabrications,” a ministry spokesperson stated. “Algeria remains committed to its role as a stabilizing force in the Sahel, and we will not be deterred by these false accusations.”

The denial follows recent reports alleging that Algeria had formed military units to conduct covert operations in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The Ministry of National Defense reiterated its commitment to transparency and its dedication to maintaining peace and security in the region.
