US Forecasts Upward Trend for Algerian Grain Production

Algiers – Official forecasts from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) indicate a promising outlook for Algerian grain production, particularly for wheat and barley, in the upcoming 2025-2026 harvest season. The projections suggest a significant improvement in the country’s agricultural output.

For wheat, the USDA anticipates a steady increase in yields. Average productivity per hectare is expected to reach 1.78 tons, marking an improvement of 0.11 tons compared to the previous season and a more substantial increase of 0.28 tons compared to the 2023-2024 season. This enhanced productivity is projected to boost national wheat production to approximately 3.2 million tons. This figure represents a notable increase of 200,000 tons compared to last season and a half-million-ton surge compared to the 2023-2024 output, reflecting positive developments in agricultural policies and production conditions.

The outlook for barley production is even more optimistic. The USDA forecasts a yield of 1.32 tons per hectare, an increase of 0.15 tons from the previous season and a 0.32-ton improvement compared to 2023-2024. Nationally, total barley production is expected to reach 1.35 million tons, representing a 150,000-ton increase from the previous season and a 320,000-ton jump compared to the 2023-2024 harvest.

Oat production, on the other hand, is expected to remain stable, with yields holding steady at 1.31 tons per hectare and total national production remaining at 110,000 tons.

These positive forecasts reflect the success of Algeria’s agricultural policies, which aim to enhance food security and reduce grain import costs. The consistent improvement in yields and production over the past three seasons suggests the sustainability of efforts to support farmers, improve agricultural techniques, and provide essential inputs. While these figures are a step in the right direction, Algeria is still striving to achieve complete self-sufficiency in grain production.
