Algerian Referee Withdraws from Africa Cup of Nations 2025

Algiers – An Algerian international referee has withdrawn from participating in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 tournament. The news comes just weeks before the start of the continental competition.

Youssef Qamouh, a prominent figure in African refereeing, will be unable to officiate at the AFCON due to health reasons. Qamouh’s selection for the tournament was a recognition of his consistent performance and notable presence in major competitions. His reputation was further solidified by FIFA’s appointment of him to officiate matches at the U-20 World Cup held in Chile between September and October.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) confirmed Qamouh’s unavailability in an official statement, citing health issues without providing specific details. The FAF extended its best wishes for a speedy recovery to the international referee and officially confirmed his withdrawal from consideration for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

DZWatch understands that Qamouh’s absence represents a loss for Algerian refereeing at a significant continental event. The hope is that he will return to the field soon, following his recovery. Further updates will be provided as they become available.

This withdrawal creates a void in the Algerian officiating team, and the FAF will likely be considering options to ensure adequate representation at the prestigious tournament.
