Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered an immediate halt to the demolition of illegally constructed dwellings during the winter months. The directive was issued during Sunday’s Council of Ministers meeting, reflecting a commitment to social sensitivity and adherence to due process.
According to a statement released by the Council of Ministers, President Tebboune emphasized the need to protect vulnerable populations from the harsh conditions of winter. He explicitly forbade any further demolition operations until the spring, underscoring the importance of upholding both Algerian law and international humanitarian norms.
The President also addressed the conduct of certain local officials, specifically targeting instances of what he termed ‘arbitrary’ demolition practices. He warned that any mayor found to be engaging in such actions, without proper regard for established Algerian legal procedures and international conventions, would face immediate suspension.
‘The well-being of our citizens, particularly during the challenging winter season, is paramount,’ stated a source close to the Council. ‘President Tebboune’s decision reflects a deep understanding of the hardships faced by those living in irregular housing and a determination to ensure that their rights are respected.’
This decision is expected to be welcomed by human rights organizations and social advocacy groups, who have long called for a more humane approach to dealing with the issue of unauthorized housing. It remains to be seen how this directive will be implemented at the local level, and what long-term solutions will be developed to address the root causes of illegal construction in Algeria.
The Council of Ministers meeting covered a range of other important issues, which will be detailed in subsequent reports.
