Algiers, Algeria – The People’s National Assembly (APN) has announced that it will begin debating the proposed law criminalizing colonialism on Sunday, December 21, 2025. The announcement follows a meeting held on Sunday evening between the Speaker of the APN, Ibrahim Boughali, and members of the committee responsible for drafting the proposed legislation.
The meeting served as a forum to review preparations for presenting the nationally significant proposal for debate. Committee members briefed the Speaker on the law’s inclusion in the Assembly’s schedule, confirming the debate’s commencement date.
Speaker Boughali closely monitored the final arrangements for the proposal, emphasizing the need for meticulous oversight of the debate process. He stressed the importance of ensuring a responsible and constructive discussion that reflects the significance of the issue in the national consciousness and collective memory.
During the meeting, which was also attended by the Chairman of the National Defense Committee – the body responsible for reviewing the proposed law – various legal and organizational aspects were addressed. The discussion focused on ensuring a smooth and efficient debate process.
The proposed law has generated considerable public interest and is expected to be the subject of intense debate within the Assembly. Proponents argue that it is a necessary step to address the historical injustices of colonialism and to safeguard national sovereignty. Opponents, however, raise concerns about potential implications for international relations and the potential for historical revisionism.
