Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Snow Across Several Algerian Regions

DZWatch Exclusive: Algeria is bracing for a period of severe weather, with heavy thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and significant snowfall expected across multiple regions. The national meteorological services have issued an orange alert, warning residents to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions starting today, Tuesday.

The eastern areas of Bechar and Beni Abbes, along with northern Timimoun, are forecast to receive between 20 and 30 millimeters of rain. This initial wave of precipitation is expected to last from 6 PM Tuesday until 3 AM Wednesday. Residents in these areas should be aware of potential flash flooding and travel disruptions.

Further north, the provinces of El Bayadh, Laghouat, and Tiaret are predicted to experience even heavier rainfall, with accumulations ranging from 30 to 50 millimeters, and potentially exceeding 70 millimeters in localized areas. These intense weather conditions are anticipated to begin at 6 PM Tuesday and continue until at least 9 AM Thursday. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution.

The alert also extends to Saida, El Menia, and Ghardaia, with rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 millimeters expected. This phase of the storm is predicted to begin around midday on Wednesday and last until at least 9 AM Thursday.

In addition to the heavy rain, significant snowfall is expected in mountainous regions above 1000 meters. Tiaret, El Bayadh, and Laghouat are forecast to receive up to 20 centimeters of snow starting at 6 PM Tuesday and lasting until 3 AM Thursday. Higher elevations in Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbes, Saida, and Naama are also expected to see snowfall, with accumulations potentially reaching 10 centimeters between 6 AM Wednesday and 11 PM Wednesday.
