Civil Defense Responds to Over 25,000 Emergencies in One Week

Civil Defense units across Algeria responded to a staggering 25,457 emergency calls between December 7th and 13th. These interventions encompassed a wide range of incidents, highlighting the critical role the Civil Defense plays in safeguarding the public.

The interventions included traffic accidents, domestic incidents, medical evacuations, and fire suppression, alongside security and safety coverage for various events. A significant portion of the activity involved medical assistance, with 16,042 interventions resulting in the evacuation and treatment of 15,708 injured or ill individuals to hospitals throughout the country. This underscores the daily humanitarian commitment of the Civil Defense.

Traffic accidents remained a major concern, prompting 2,107 interventions to address 1,209 separate incidents. Tragically, these accidents resulted in 42 fatalities and 1,415 injuries of varying severity. Boumerdes province recorded the highest toll, with 3 deaths and 39 injuries resulting from 39 separate traffic collisions.

Firefighters were kept busy, responding to 904 calls and successfully extinguishing 561 fires, including residential, industrial, and other types of blazes. Algiers province recorded the highest number of fires with 95 incidents, followed by Oran with 33, and Blida with 23.

In addition to these major categories, Civil Defense units undertook 6,404 miscellaneous interventions, rescuing 551 individuals from dangerous situations and providing assistance in 5,592 cases.

Concerning carbon monoxide poisoning, a recurrent hazard during the winter months, Civil Defense responded to 32 incidents. Paramedics provided first aid to 72 individuals suffering from carbon monoxide inhalation before transporting them to medical facilities. Sadly, 4 fatalities were reported, with two in Oum El Bouaghi and one each in Blida and Tiaret.
