Ghardaia Solar Plant Project Commences

Ghardaia, Algeria – Construction has officially begun on a new solar power plant in Ghardaia, with a capacity of 82 megawatts. The project, located in the Kedia Chouf area of El Guerrara, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Ghardaia, spans a total area of 200 hectares.

The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, oversaw the commencement of the project on Tuesday, emphasizing its importance to the region. He stated that the facility will significantly enhance the photovoltaic energy system in the Ghardaia region. Furthermore, it is expected to generate employment opportunities for local youth during both the construction and operational phases.

Minister Adjal highlighted Ghardaia’s leading role in energy production, noting the region’s energy self-sufficiency, exceeding 1200 megawatts. He also mentioned the connection of approximately 1600 agricultural farms to the electrical grid in the area.

“This project demonstrates Algeria’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development,” the Minister stated during the ceremony. The solar plant is a key component of the nation’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

In addition to the Ghardaia project, the Minister affirmed Algeria’s growing influence as an energy hub in Africa. He also referenced the ambitious “Energy Project of the Century,” which aims to connect the north and south of the country with an electrical grid extending over 1600 kilometers. This project is being implemented in several phases and is intended to further integrate the nation’s energy infrastructure.
