Asfi Floods: Calls for Preparedness and Compensation Grow

Asfi, Morocco – Following devastating floods in the coastal city of Asfi, calls are mounting for increased preparedness measures and compensation for affected residents. Recent torrential rains and severe weather conditions across Morocco have prompted a nationwide response, with authorities urging vigilance and resource mobilization.

The Ministry of Interior has issued a directive to regional governors to elevate preparedness levels in anticipation of further weather-related challenges. This follows reports of significant flooding in Asfi, where dozens have tragically lost their lives. The ministry has also announced the activation of a national command center and regional monitoring committees to oversee response efforts.

The Moroccan government operates a mixed system for disaster relief. This includes mandatory insurance coverage for property and vehicles, as well as a solidarity fund for those without insurance. The fund aims to compensate victims for physical and material damages resulting from natural disasters or violent events, once the Prime Minister declares the event a ‘catastrophic occurrence.’ This system is founded on the principle of national solidarity enshrined in the constitution.

Amidst the crisis, demands for accountability are also rising. The public prosecutor’s office announced an investigation into the causes and circumstances surrounding the floods. The probe aims to determine the factors that contributed to the disaster and identify any potential shortcomings in prevention or response measures.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Nadia Tihami has urged the government to declare Asfi a disaster-stricken area, triggering the activation of the compensation system for victims and damages. She emphasized the need to implement the law establishing a system to cover the consequences of catastrophic events, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives. Urgent assistance is reportedly being distributed to families impacted by the severe weather conditions across the kingdom, but the long-term recovery needs remain substantial.
