Boudjedra Sparks Controversy: Naguib Mahfouz Didn’t Deserve Nobel!

In a fiery and provocative interview on ‘El Khabar TV,’ renowned Algerian novelist Rachid Boudjedra ignited a storm of controversy by questioning the integrity of prestigious international literary awards, particularly the Nobel Prize in Literature. He also surprisingly predicted that Boualem Sansal could one day receive the coveted prize.

Nobel: A Politically Charged Award?

Boudjedra argues that the Nobel Prize in Literature is far from neutral, asserting it is deeply rooted in political and ideological considerations. He contends that the award is not solely based on literary merit but is heavily influenced by political agendas. Boudjedra emphasized that the Nobel is essentially a Western award, primarily bestowed upon individuals who align with Western ideologies or provide services that resonate with Western interests.

Sansal’s Path to Stockholm?

Within this framework, Boudjedra boldly predicted that Boualem Sansal has a strong chance of winning the Nobel Prize, attributing this to what he described as the ‘services’ Sansal has rendered. He acknowledged an ideological divide between them, stating he is a leftist while Sansal and others are right-leaning, but maintained he speaks his truth. Boudjedra noted that Sansal’s recent imprisonment in Algeria for statements deemed offensive to national unity has paradoxically boosted his international profile and garnered him numerous awards. He viewed the presidential pardon granted to Sansal as a shrewd move to disarm French media and politicians who often portray Algeria as hostile to freedoms.

Naguib Mahfouz: A Controversial Nobel Case

To bolster his argument about the political nature of the Nobel Prize, Boudjedra revisited the case of the late Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz, claiming that Mahfouz did not deserve the award from a purely literary standpoint. He characterized Mahfouz as a simple, average, and popular writer, even suggesting he was a writer for teenagers. Boudjedra criticized Mahfouz’s works for lacking technical or psychological innovation in the novel and the depth that he claims to have introduced through psychoanalysis and the exploration of themes like sex and modernization. Boudjedra’s comments have undoubtedly sparked a wide debate about the criteria and motivations behind literary awards.
