Algiers, DZWatch – Algeria is projected to have the fourth-highest number of births among Arab nations in 2025, according to a recent United Nations report on global population forecasts. The report estimates approximately 855,000 births will occur in Algeria throughout the year.
This figure places Algeria behind Egypt, which leads the region with an estimated 2.45 million births, followed by Yemen with 1.40 million, and Iraq with 1.18 million. Algeria’s projected birth rate reflects continued population growth within the country, although at a slower pace compared to the top three nations.
The expected 855,000 births also highlight the ongoing demographic shifts occurring in Algeria. Compared to other Arab countries, Algeria occupies a middle ground in terms of birth rates, largely influenced by its population of around 45 million people. The significant difference between the projected births in Algeria and Egypt is primarily attributed to the disparity in total population size, with Egypt’s population exceeding 105 million.
However, this projected number of births raises important questions about the capacity of Algeria’s infrastructure and public services to accommodate this growth. With over 850,000 children expected to be born annually, strategic planning is crucial in areas such as healthcare, education, housing, and employment.
Like many Arab nations, Algeria is undergoing significant demographic changes, including a gradual decline in fertility rates compared to previous decades, alongside an increase in life expectancy and improved reproductive health indicators. This high number of births presents both an opportunity and a challenge. It provides a young population base that could drive future economic growth but also requires substantial investments in various sectors to ensure the well-being and prosperity of future generations.DZWatch will continue to monitor these trends and their impact on Algerian society.
