Ministry Orders Removal of Unauthorized Speed Bumps

Algiers, December 17, 2025 – The Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation has issued a directive to all governors (walis) across Algeria, mandating the removal of unauthorized speed bumps. The announcement was made by Minister Said Saayoud during a parliamentary session held last night to discuss the proposed traffic law.

Minister Saayoud revealed that an estimated 70% of speed bumps currently in place have been constructed by citizens without adhering to established safety standards and regulations. This widespread practice poses a significant risk to motorists and contributes to traffic accidents.

“While previous communications have been sent to the governors regarding this issue, it has become clear that these measures have not been sufficient to curb the proliferation of illegal speed bumps,” Minister Saayoud stated. He emphasized the need for a more assertive approach to address the problem.

The ministry will be sending a renewed and strengthened directive to the governors, underscoring the urgency and importance of the matter. The communication will explicitly state that the authority to construct speed bumps rests solely with the Public Works Department. Any speed bumps not authorized and constructed by the Public Works Department are to be considered illegal and subject to immediate removal.

This decisive action by the Ministry of Interior aims to improve road safety, reduce traffic disruptions, and ensure that all road infrastructure adheres to established standards. The directive is expected to be implemented swiftly across all provinces, with local authorities responsible for identifying and removing unauthorized speed bumps within their jurisdictions.
