Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to Travel Grant Amid Concerns

Algiers – The Algerian government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to disbursing the travel grant, despite concerns about potential misuse. Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation, Said Sayoud, affirmed that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to provide a travel allowance of 750 euros to Algerian citizens remains firmly in place.

Speaking before the National People’s Assembly during a discussion on the traffic law project, Minister Sayoud emphasized that there is no intention to rescind the grant. He described it as an inherent right of Algerian citizens, designed to enable families to enjoy comfortable and fulfilling vacations abroad.

However, the Minister acknowledged the need to strengthen the legal framework surrounding the grant to prevent its diversion for unintended purposes. He specifically highlighted instances of fraudulent activity perpetrated by certain travel agencies seeking to exploit the system.

“We are reinforcing the legal structures to prevent the misuse of this grant,” Sayoud stated. One proposed solution involves requiring beneficiaries to possess a bank card to ensure traceability of the funds. This measure aims to curb illicit practices and ensure the grant reaches its intended recipients.

The Minister revealed instances of travel agencies transporting individuals to Tunisia solely to obtain passport stamps, only to re-enter Algeria through unofficial border crossings. He cited the unusual influx of approximately 5,000 buses traveling to Tunisia between November and December, a period when such travel is uncommon for Algerians.

These observations prompted increased monitoring, leading to the discovery of approximately 100,000 unemployed individuals allegedly exploited by these agencies. Minister Sayoud described these figures as “alarming,” prompting the suspension of bus crossings and the implementation of a permit requirement for crossing the Algerian-Tunisian border. No such permits have been requested to date.
