Algeria and Chad are deepening their collaboration in the mining sector, focusing on enhanced cooperation across the entire value chain. This initiative was highlighted during a working session held at the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines in Algiers.
The meeting was led by Karima Bekir Tafer, Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, in charge of Mines, and her Chadian counterpart, Ndolenodji Alixe Naïmbaye, Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Geology. Discussions centered on strategies to bolster bilateral cooperation, particularly in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, as well as geological research and studies.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the talks also covered geological and mining mapping, the exchange of expertise and experiences, with emphasis on training, administrative organization, and the legal framework governing mining activities.
During the session, Secretary of State Tafer presented an overview of Algeria’s mining sector, showcasing the various institutions, bodies, and agencies involved, along with their respective roles. She also provided insights into the new legal framework for mining activities, which aligns with the government’s vision to modernize the sector’s legal and institutional landscape. This modernization aims to attract investments and reinforce national sovereignty over natural resources, while adapting to global economic shifts.
Secretary of State Tafer emphasized Algeria’s readiness to share its expertise and experience with Chad, especially in geological research, mapping, digitization, and the legal regulation of mining activities.
The Chadian delegation expressed strong interest in strengthening cooperation with Algeria and leveraging Algeria’s experience in legal and regulatory frameworks for mining activities, management and control mechanisms, mineral resource exploitation and processing, the mining industry, and environmental protection.
A visit by Chadian mining experts to Algeria in May 2024 served as a pivotal moment for launching a technical partnership. This visit enabled the Chadian delegation to gain valuable insights into Algeria’s expertise in geological mapping, remote sensing, geophysics, and other earth science disciplines.
