Zakri Expresses Interest in Coaching Saudi National Team

Algiers – Algerian coach Noureddine Zakri has emerged as a potential candidate for the head coach position of the Saudi Arabian national team. His name is circulating amidst uncertainty surrounding the future of current coach Hervé Renard, following Saudi Arabia’s exit from the Arab Cup 2025 semi-finals in Qatar.

Renard is facing increasing pressure from Saudi fans after the team’s defeat to Jordan, which prevented them from reaching the Arab Cup final. The loss triggered widespread criticism, with many calling for his departure. While Renard has acknowledged the criticism and stated he would respect any decision made by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, he previously led the team to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

In a recent online appearance with Algerian journalists, Zakri openly expressed his readiness to take on the challenge of coaching the Saudi national team, should an official offer be made. He stated that leading the Saudi team would be a great honor, emphasizing his familiarity with Saudi fans and their appreciation for quality football. He added that he is prepared to join the team whenever needed, provided he has the confidence of the relevant authorities.

Zakri boasts extensive experience in Saudi football, starting his journey in 2013 with Al-Raed. He has since managed several other clubs, including Al-Fayha, Damac, and most recently, Al-Kholood, where he successfully saved the team from relegation last season.

Zakri is known for his outspoken views on the over-reliance on foreign coaches in Saudi clubs and national teams. He has previously voiced his opposition to this policy on multiple occasions. Following Saudi Arabia’s loss to Jordan, Zakri alluded to the criticism directed at the coaching staff, in a veiled reference to Renard. He has also criticized the appointment of Roberto Mancini as coach.
