Algeria’s Karantika Crowned World’s Best Snack!

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria’s beloved Karantika has achieved global recognition, topping a recent international ranking of best snacks. This savory chickpea-based delight, also known as Garantita or Karan, has surpassed culinary staples from Italy, Japan, Lithuania, China, and Malaysia, solidifying its place as a premier street food.

Karantika is a popular street food in Algeria, enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. Its appeal lies in its simplicity and comforting flavor.

This traditional dish is prepared from a smooth batter of chickpea flour, water, oil, salt, pepper, and sometimes egg. The mixture is baked until a light golden crust forms on top, while the inside remains soft and creamy. Variations may include a sprinkle of cumin or a touch of chili pepper for added flavor.

Typically, Karantika is served in squares or large portions, often within a bread roll. Many prefer it with harissa or mustard for a spicy or tangy complement to its mild taste.

Originating in Algiers, where it’s known as ‘Karantika,’ the dish’s name is derived from the Spanish word ‘Calentita,’ meaning ‘warm,’ reflecting a legacy from the colonial era. Over time, Karantika has evolved from a simple working-class meal into a symbol of Algerian street food and collective memory.

This latest accolade adds to the growing international recognition of Algerian cuisine. Other traditional dishes, such as Rechta and Makrout El Louz, have also gained prominence in global rankings, with Makrout El Louz recently securing second place on a list of the world’s most delicious sweets.
