Aouar Ruled Out of AFCON 2025 Due to Injury

Algiers, Algeria – In a blow to the Algerian national team, midfielder Houssem Aouar will miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 tournament. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced the news Friday, confirming that Aouar sustained a muscular injury during the team’s preparations for the competition.

According to a statement released by the FAF, the injury occurred during a training session, and after evaluation by the national team’s medical staff, it was determined that Aouar would be unable to participate in the tournament. The technical staff, led by head coach Vladimir Petkovic, subsequently made the decision to excuse Aouar from the squad.

“It’s a significant loss for the team,” a source close to the national team told DZWatch. “Houssem is a key player, and his absence will be felt. However, we have confidence in the other players to step up and fill the void.”

In response to Aouar’s injury, Coach Petkovic has called up midfielder Himad Abdelli as a replacement. Abdelli, who plays his club football in France, will join the squad immediately to begin preparations for the tournament.

The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 is set to begin in January, and Algeria is considered one of the favorites to win the title. The loss of Aouar will undoubtedly present a challenge, but the team remains determined to compete at the highest level. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on the Algerian national team’s preparations for AFCON 2025.
