Algiers, DZWatch – A significant shift is underway in Algerian politics as a trio of parties historically associated with election boycotts have announced their intention to participate in upcoming legislative and local elections. This move marks a departure from their stance in the 2021 polls.
Following the lead of the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), both the Workers’ Party (PT) and the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD) have confirmed their participation. These parties, part of the ‘Political Pledge for Democratic Transition’ bloc, had previously boycotted major political events, including the 2019 presidential election, following the Hirak protest movement.
Sources indicate a reassessment of their political strategies, driven by a renewed belief in the importance of regaining representation within elected institutions through active participation in the electoral process.
These parties, now returning from what some described as electoral isolation, cite a growing awareness of the internal and external challenges facing Algeria as justification for their change of heart. Yusuf Aouchiche, First Secretary of the FFS, who broke the boycott trend by running in the 2024 presidential election, previously emphasized the need to address voter apathy through reforms and revised laws that guarantee freedom of expression while respecting national sovereignty. He advocated for a representative political system that reflects the aspirations of the Algerian people.
The leader of the Workers’ Party has stated that the upcoming elections could be a vehicle for change, achievable not only through revolutions but also through the ballot box and popular mobilization. She also emphasized the need to thwart what she described as foreign interference targeting Algeria.
RCD President Othmane Mazouz, following a vote by the party’s national council in favor of participation, affirmed his party’s commitment to the electoral process. DZWatch will continue to provide updates as the election season progresses.
