American security agencies have reportedly debunked the Israeli narrative surrounding the death of Nuno Loreiro, a nuclear energy professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Police announced on Thursday the discovery of the shooter’s body, who apparently died by suicide inside a storage facility. Authorities have stated there is no evidence linking the crime to Iran.
According to the police investigation, the shooter and the victim were former classmates at a university in Lisbon, Portugal. The motive for the killing remains unknown. Investigators also suspect the same individual was responsible for a mass shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island, which resulted in two fatalities and eight injuries.
Israeli media outlets had previously connected the MIT professor’s death to Iran, alleging that the professor was Jewish and a supporter of Israel. This portrayal attempted to frame the incident as an antisemitic attack, implicitly suggesting Tehran’s involvement. These claims have sparked widespread condemnation online.
The developments have generated significant online reactions. Many commentators have expressed outrage over what they describe as a pattern of Israeli narratives based on premature accusations.
Writer Frances Cassandra stated, “So the Brown University shooter wasn’t an Arab terrorist, and as far as we know, wasn’t targeting a Jewish professor or Jewish students, and the MIT shooting had nothing to do with Iran. These claims were floated in Israeli media. Why does Israel get away with peddling such falsehoods?”
British writer George Galloway commented, “You all claimed the murderer of the Brown and MIT students was shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ as he killed his victims. You all claimed Iran had a role. You all claimed the professor was a Jewish supporter of Israel. Now you are exposed as fools or liars – which are you?”
The incident has raised questions about the responsibility of news outlets to verify information before disseminating potentially inflammatory accusations, especially in politically sensitive situations. DZWatch continues to follow this developing story.
