Traffic Accidents Claim 17 Lives in 48 Hours Across Algeria

Tragic traffic accidents across several Algerian provinces have resulted in 17 fatalities and 438 injuries over the past 48 hours. Civil Protection units responded to 373 separate incidents, providing on-site medical assistance and transporting the injured to local hospitals.

According to a statement released by the Civil Protection directorate, their units recorded a total of 5765 interventions nationwide between December 18th and December 20th, 2025. This equates to an intervention approximately every 30 seconds. These interventions included 3615 medical evacuations and 966 various operations, triggered by emergency calls from citizens.

The interventions spanned a wide range of emergencies, including traffic accidents, domestic incidents, medical evacuations, fire suppression, and responses to weather-related events.

The province of Boumerdes recorded the highest toll from traffic accidents, with 3 deaths and 25 injuries resulting from 19 separate incidents.

In a separate series of incidents, Civil Protection units responded to reports of 33 individuals suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning due to faulty heating systems and water heaters. The victims were treated at the scene and transported to hospitals in stable condition. Sadly, 4 deaths were recorded, including 3 from carbon monoxide poisoning and one from gas inhalation.

Among the deceased were two women, aged 58 and 92, who succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning from a water heater in Ghardaia. A 33-year-old man died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a traditional stove in Guelma. In Tiaret, a 29-year-old man died from gas inhalation, while another individual was rescued.

Furthermore, Civil Protection units extinguished 6 urban fires in Algiers (2 fires), Medea, Constantine, Skikda, and Chlef. One person was injured in Medea, and two sustained second-degree burns in Constantine. The injured were treated and transported to nearby medical facilities. The prompt response of the Civil Protection units prevented the fires from spreading to surrounding areas.
