Egyptian football legend Mohamed Abou Treika has launched a scathing attack on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the announcement by its President, Patrice Motsepe, regarding significant changes to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The most notable change is the move to a quadrennial format, shifting away from the traditional biennial schedule that had been in place since the tournament’s inception in 1957. CAF has justified the decision by stating its desire to ensure higher quality and sustainable development for African football.
According to the new plan, the 2028 edition of AFCON will be followed by the 2032 edition, coinciding with the Summer Olympic Games. Additionally, CAF has decided to abolish the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and introduce a new biennial national team competition called the ‘African Nations League,’ mirroring the UEFA Nations League.
Furthermore, CAF announced an increase of $1 million in financial support for each African nation, as part of a strategic partnership with FIFA aimed at promoting professionalism and continental investment.
Abou Treika responded to these decisions via social media, criticizing the changes. ‘This happens when you don’t realize your true value and position… he who lacks something cannot give it,’ he stated, implying that CAF had succumbed to pressure from European clubs and FIFA, prioritizing European interests over those of Africa.
Observers suggest that CAF’s decision will allow European clubs to benefit from their African players, following disputes over player release dates. The next Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, featuring 24 teams, including a record seven Arab nations.
