Iraqi Leaders Urge Swift Presidential Nomination, Government Formation

Baghdad – Calls are mounting within Iraq for the prompt resolution of presidential nominations and the formation of a new government, following recent parliamentary elections. The President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zidan, emphasized the constitutional imperative to finalize the presidential nomination within the 30-day timeframe following the election of the parliamentary leadership.

Zidan, during a meeting with Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Bafel Talabani, stressed that the inaugural session of Parliament, scheduled for December 29th, must conclude with the election of a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers. He asserted that postponing or extending this session is not constitutionally or legally permissible. Zidan highlighted the importance of adhering to constitutional timelines for electing the three branches of government – Parliament, the Presidency, and the designation of a Prime Minister to form the new Iraqi government – ensuring the completion of the legislative and executive authorities.

Meanwhile, during a memorial ceremony in Baghdad, several political leaders echoed the call for expediting the formation of a government that represents all Iraqis, capable of bolstering security, stability, and combating corruption. Outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the need to address constitutional requirements based on responsibility towards the country’s higher interests, following active electoral participation.

Outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, urged political factions to overcome their differences, stressing the importance of preserving national gains and accelerating government formation while adhering to constitutional deadlines. Ammar al-Hakim, head of the National Wisdom Movement, cautioned that while political disagreement is necessary, transforming it into sharp division disrupts institutions and opens the door to foreign interference. He similarly emphasized the need for a strong government aware of the current stage’s requirements.

DZWatch sources report that the new Iraqi Parliament is scheduled to hold its first session on December 29th, presided over by the oldest member, to elect a new Speaker for the next four years. However, uncertainty remains regarding agreements among Sunni political parties concerning the nomination of a candidate for Speaker of Parliament, mirroring the lack of clarity surrounding other key political appointments.
