Algiers, December 20, 2025 – In a significant announcement reshaping the landscape of African football, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe revealed today that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition from its current two-year cycle to a quadrennial event.
Speaking at a press conference held earlier today, Motsepe stated that the decision aims to enhance the prestige and competitiveness of the tournament. He clarified that the upcoming AFCON 2027 will proceed as scheduled, maintaining its original timing. The change to a four-year cycle will take effect afterwards.
The CAF President also announced a substantial increase in prize money for the AFCON champions. The winning team will now receive $10 million, a significant increase from the previous $7 million. This move is intended to further incentivize participation and elevate the overall standard of the competition.
In addition to the AFCON changes, Motsepe unveiled plans for a new competition for African national teams: the African Nations League. Details regarding the format and scheduling of this new league are expected to be released in the coming months. This initiative aims to provide more competitive opportunities for African nations and foster greater development of football across the continent.
