In a move aimed at alleviating persistent congestion issues, the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, conducted a surprise visit to the Port of Algiers. The unscheduled inspection focused on the excessive buildup of shipping containers and the prolonged periods they remain at the port.
The Minister emphasized that delays by some economic operators in retrieving their containers have significantly contributed to the overcrowding, negatively impacting overall port operations. During the visit, Saayoud stressed the critical need for enhanced coordination between port authorities and customs services.
He further mandated that relevant economic actors be held accountable for their legal responsibilities. This includes implementing appropriate regulatory measures, with the potential for non-compliant entities to be placed on blacklists, if necessary. The Minister expressed satisfaction with the positive outcomes observed in the maritime waiting area, noting a significant reduction to just two ships awaiting entry. He lauded this achievement as a previously unattainable goal.
Saayoud also commended the efforts of port management, police, and customs officials for their demonstrated level of collaboration.
The second part of the visit included an inspection of docks 8 and 9, where the Minister assessed their current state. He issued immediate instructions to expedite ongoing construction work, ensuring it adheres to established standards and is completed before the summer season. He also called for the expansion of the maritime terminal to improve reception conditions and enhance the port’s capacity to handle increasing traffic demands.
Concluding his visit, the Minister directed the Secretary-General to activate inspection and monitoring units across all ports. This measure aims to guarantee meticulous oversight of all operations and swift intervention to address any irregularities, ensuring smooth and secure port activities nationwide.
