CAF Unveils Ambitious Football Roadmap to 2034

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has outlined its strategic vision for the future of African football, extending to 2034. This roadmap includes significant changes to competition formats and scheduling, aiming to enhance the stability and appeal of the continental game.

Following a recent Executive Committee meeting, CAF announced key decisions, most notably the move to a four-year cycle for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This change intends to provide a more predictable calendar for players, clubs, and national teams.

In addition to the adjusted AFCON schedule, CAF revealed plans for a new competition: the African Nations League. Details regarding the format and structure of this tournament are expected to be released in the coming months. This new league aims to further develop African football and provide more competitive opportunities for national teams.

The 36th edition of AFCON in 2027 will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. This collaborative approach reflects CAF’s commitment to supporting joint bids for major tournaments, fostering regional cooperation and shared infrastructure development. CAF also confirmed that the 37th edition will be held in 2028, returning the tournament to even years to better align with the global football calendar.

The host nation(s) for the 2028 AFCON are scheduled to be announced on January 17, 2026, following a thorough evaluation of bids and organizational plans.

These strategic initiatives are part of CAF’s broader effort to elevate African football, strike a better balance between continental and international commitments, and create a more attractive and sustainable ecosystem for all stakeholders. The changes are hoped to further enhance the global appeal of African football.
