Syrian Authorities Seize Anti-Aircraft Missiles in Deir Ezzor

Syrian authorities announced today the seizure of anti-aircraft missiles in the Deir Ezzor province, thwarting an attempt to smuggle them out of the country. The Ministry of Interior stated that the operation took place in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

According to a ministry statement, intelligence received by security forces in Al-Bukamal indicated the presence of anti-aircraft missiles concealed within a residential property. The missiles were allegedly being prepared for illicit export.

Following the intelligence report, security forces conducted a targeted raid, resulting in the confiscation of SAM-7 missiles. The Ministry confirmed that the seized weapons have been impounded, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the smuggling operation.

“We remain committed to combating all forms of smuggling and illegal activities,” the statement emphasized. “We will continue to take necessary measures to ensure the security and stability of the nation.”

While the intended destination of the smuggled missiles was not disclosed, Al-Bukamal’s location on the border with Iraq, and its associated border crossing, raises concerns about regional security implications. The ministry did not elaborate on the potential recipients of the weapons.

Since the change of power in late 2024, the Syrian administration has prioritized restoring security, preventing arms trafficking, and pursuing remnants of the previous regime. Furthermore, authorities are actively combating the proliferation of narcotics, a problem that escalated during the final years of the former government.

The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and prevent the flow of weapons that could further destabilize the area.
