Algeria Announces Sweeping Reforms to Secondary Education

Algiers – The Algerian Ministry of National Education is set to implement significant reforms to the secondary education system, aiming to streamline curricula and better prepare students for future academic and professional pursuits. The reforms, announced by Minister of National Education Mohamed Essaghir Seddaoui, follow an extensive review of existing programs.

A key component of the reform is the elimination of non-essential subjects in the final years of secondary school. This move is intended to allow students to focus on core subjects directly related to their chosen specialization, enhancing their understanding and improving academic performance. The content of some subjects in the intermediate education certificate (BEM) exam will also be reduced.

Minister Seddaoui, responding to questions from members of the Children’s Parliament, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to adapting educational programs to rapidly evolving knowledge and technological advancements. The reforms aim to alleviate academic pressure on students while ensuring they receive a relevant and comprehensive education.

The National Committee for Quality Education conducted an in-depth assessment of existing curricula, identifying the need for significant reorganization. The reforms prioritize specialization, allowing students to dedicate their efforts to subjects aligned with their academic and career aspirations. This targeted approach aims to improve learning outcomes and increase the overall effectiveness of the education system.

Details regarding the specific subjects to be eliminated will be announced soon, with a gradual and carefully considered implementation plan. The Ministry emphasizes that this change will enable students to concentrate on essential subjects.

Furthermore, the Ministry is developing a new specialization in secondary education focused on computer science, digital technologies, and information systems. This initiative reflects a commitment to expanding educational opportunities and aligning the curriculum with the demands of the modern economy.
