AFCON Attendance Woes: Algeria Match Tickets Under Scrutiny

RABAT – The early stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been marred by surprisingly low attendance figures, sparking debate among fans and raising serious questions about ticket distribution, particularly concerning matches involving the Algerian national team.

While the opening match and the Egypt-Zimbabwe encounter saw relatively decent turnouts, many other games have been played in front of noticeably sparse crowds. This situation has amplified concerns, especially considering reports that tickets for Algeria’s matches were sold out well in advance.

The apparent discrepancy has left many Algerian supporters who traveled to Morocco frustrated, as they were unable to secure tickets despite assurances of availability. Adding fuel to the fire, the recent launch of a ticket resale platform, purportedly due to high demand, has only intensified speculation.

Prominent sports commentator Hafid Derradji voiced concerns, stating, “The question arises: who initially purchased the tickets for the ‘Greens’ matches? How could they be completely sold out, given the general appearance of the stands in other tournament games?”

Despite assurances from CAF President Patrice Motsepe that tickets for Algeria’s matches have indeed been fully purchased, the true picture will only become clear when Algeria takes to the field. The actual number of fans present will ultimately determine the validity of the claims regarding ticket sales.

The Algerian football community remains on high alert, eagerly awaiting the upcoming matches. There is a strong hope that the stands will be filled with passionate supporters of the ‘Greens,’ reflecting the national team’s immense popularity and dispelling the cloud of uncertainty that has surrounded the ticket situation since the start of the continental competition. The coming days will be crucial in resolving this issue.
