Yemen: Gov’t and Houthis Agree to Prisoner Exchange Deal

Muscat, Oman – In a significant development, the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels have reached an agreement to exchange prisoners. The deal, brokered in Muscat under the auspices of the United Nations, paves the way for the release of approximately 3,000 detainees from both sides of the conflict.

The agreement marks a crucial step towards de-escalation and potential peace negotiations in the war-torn nation. The exchange is expected to involve combatants, political prisoners, and civilians who have been held captive for extended periods.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has lauded the outcome of the talks, emphasizing the humanitarian importance of making progress on the release of conflict-related detainees. He stated that this agreement provides a glimmer of hope for countless families who have been separated from their loved ones for far too long.

The prisoner exchange is anticipated to occur in the coming weeks, with logistical details being finalized by a joint committee comprised of representatives from both the government and the Houthis. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is expected to play a key role in facilitating the transfer of prisoners, ensuring their safe return to their families.

While this agreement represents a positive step, significant challenges remain in achieving a lasting peace in Yemen. DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.
