Algiers, December 24, 2025 – The Algerian government is intensifying its efforts to bolster local pharmaceutical production, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and foster a more self-sufficient healthcare sector. The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouideri, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting economic operators involved in the manufacturing of medications and medical supplies.
During a visit to the 33rd Algerian Production Fair at the Palais des Expositions, Kouideri emphasized the importance of encouraging these businesses to localize their production within Algeria. He stated that the ministry is dedicated to assisting all stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry, providing the necessary resources and support to facilitate the transition to domestic manufacturing.
“Our objective is to diversify the types of pharmaceutical products manufactured locally, while simultaneously keeping pace with the advancements in the global pharmaceutical industry,” Kouideri explained. He further added that the government is committed to ensuring that any surplus production is directed towards export markets, thereby contributing to the country’s economic growth.
The Minister toured various exhibition stands, engaging with representatives from different pharmaceutical companies. He listened to detailed presentations about their operations, their ambitions for expanding their production capabilities, and their goals for strengthening their presence both on the African continent and in the international arena.
This renewed push for pharmaceutical localization is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing Algeria’s healthcare security and promoting sustainable economic development. The government believes that by fostering a thriving domestic pharmaceutical industry, it can create jobs, attract investment, and ultimately improve the health and well-being of its citizens. The focus on export also signals a desire to become a key player in the regional and global pharmaceutical market.
