Luca Zidane Reveals Motivation for Representing Algeria

DZWatch Exclusive: National team goalkeeper Luca Zidane has revealed that his grandfather was the primary reason behind his decision to represent Algeria in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

In an interview, Zidane emphasized the significance of participating in the 2025 AFCON with the Algerian national team for the first time, particularly to make his grandfather happy. He explained that his grandfather was incredibly excited upon learning of his grandson’s decision to represent the “Desert Warriors.”

“Of course, I discussed the matter with my family, and everyone was happy for me,” Zidane stated. “When I think of Algeria, I immediately think of my grandfather. Since we were young, we were raised with Algerian culture in the family.”

“I spoke with him before joining the national team, and he was very happy and proud of my decision,” he continued. “Making my grandfather proud of my presence with the team is very important to me, and the next jersey I wear will be dedicated to him.”

The 27-year-old goalkeeper added that the Africa Cup of Nations will be “full of intensity and high levels of competition from the participating teams.” He also expressed his ambition to participate with Algeria in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, considering it “the biggest challenge any player can face.”

Luca Zidane, son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, chose to represent Algeria, the country of his ancestors.
