The Syrian Interior Ministry has issued a call for former security personnel who defected from the ranks during the previous regime to return to service. According to an official announcement, the ministry is inviting officers and enlisted personnel who left the Internal Security Forces between the start of the Syrian revolution in 2011 and early March 2020 to re-apply.
A statement released by the ministry urges those interested in rejoining to visit the Human Resources branches of the Internal Security Forces command in their respective governorates. Applicants are required to bring all relevant documents and paperwork pertaining to their previous service.
The ministry stated that applicants will be interviewed and their situations assessed. Decisions regarding their reintegration into the Internal Security Forces will be made in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. The ministry aims to leverage the prior experience of these individuals while safeguarding their rights. The deadline for applications is February 1st.
This initiative follows a previous announcement in November, where the Interior Ministry launched an online form for communication with officers who defected and are currently residing outside the country. At the time, Interior Minister Anas Khattab announced the opening of channels for communication with defected officers abroad, with the goal of registering their information and establishing a formal communication mechanism to address their situations within the appropriate legal and administrative frameworks.
This call from the Syrian government indicates a willingness to integrate qualified individuals, including those who opposed the previous regime, into the rebuilding of the nation. It is viewed by some as a step towards reconciliation and national unity.
Syrian factions gained control of the country on December 8, 2024, ending 61 years of Ba’ath Party rule, including 53 years under the Assad family.
