Petkovic Tops List as Highest Paid African Nations Coach

Algiers – Vladimir Petkovic, the current coach of the Algerian national football team, has emerged as the highest-paid coach among all African national teams, according to recent data.

Estimates suggest that the Bosnian coach earns a monthly salary of approximately 135,000 euros. This figure positions him significantly ahead of his counterparts in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) region. This substantial compensation reflects the high expectations placed on Petkovic by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), especially with the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Petkovic’s annual salary approaches one million euros before bonuses, making him the only coach in Africa to reach this financial milestone. This investment underscores the pressure he faces to deliver results in what is anticipated to be a highly competitive AFCON tournament.

The coaching landscape for the 24 participating nations in the Africa Cup of Nations is diverse. It includes 14 African coaches, 9 European coaches (including two from France), and one coach from Argentina, showcasing a variety of training philosophies and backgrounds.

The gap between Petkovic’s salary and those of other coaches is considerable. Hugo Broos (South Africa) and Emerse Fae (Ivory Coast) both earn an estimated 75,000 euros per month, while Walid Regragui (Morocco) earns around 70,000 euros. James Kwesi Appiah (Sudan) receives approximately 48,000 euros monthly.

Further down the list, Gernot Rohr (Benin) receives about 25,000 euros. Local coaches tend to occupy the lower end of the pay scale. For instance, both Pape Thiaw (Senegal) and Tom Saintfiet (Mali) earn roughly 20,000 euros per month, followed by Sami Trabelsi (Tunisia) at 15,000 euros. The lowest-paid coach is Brama Traore (Burkina Faso), with a salary of just 10,000 euros per month. The data highlights a trend where lower salaries are primarily associated with coaches overseeing their own national teams.
