Petkovic: Algeria Must Build on Strong AFCON Start

ALGIERS – National team coach Vladimir Petkovic has emphasized the need for Algeria to build upon their positive start to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign. He stated that while the initial match was encouraging, the upcoming stages demand heightened focus and diligent work, especially with a challenging encounter against Burkina Faso looming.

During a press conference, Petkovic stressed that winning the first match is insufficient. “Confirmation is essential because the upcoming matches will be more difficult,” he explained. He views the opening game as a crucial opportunity to diagnose shortcomings and rectify errors before the second fixture.

The national coach conveyed his realistic approach to the team, acknowledging identified problems and working towards solutions. He added that the technical staff has successfully guided the squad, facilitating improvements in both collective and individual performance.

Regarding the overall level of the competition’s first round, Petkovic noted that most matches were closely contested. While favored teams achieved positive results, others aimed to cause upsets, reflecting the tournament’s difficulty and intense competition.

Looking ahead to the match against Burkina Faso, the national coach considers them a leading contender for qualification from the group. He described them as an organized team, physically strong, and playing with tight lines, possessing considerable cohesion due to their long-standing stable lineup.

Petkovic affirmed that the Algerian team is prepared for this challenge and that all players are eager to perform at their best. He emphasized the importance of respecting the opponent and preparing thoroughly, both mentally and tactically, for what he termed a “difficult and pivotal” match.

The coach concluded by highlighting the significance of the mental aspect in such continental tournaments. He reiterated his commitment to instilling his football philosophy and establishing a clear identity for the national team, considering it a fundamental element for success in any major championship.
