Royal Unveils Priorities as Head of France-Algeria Association

Algiers – Ségolène Royal, the newly appointed head of the France-Algeria Association, has outlined her priorities, emphasizing the importance of bolstering ties between the two nations amid recent diplomatic tensions. In her first official statement, released via social media platforms, Royal affirmed her commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship between France and Algeria, particularly during this challenging period.

Royal stated that her efforts would build upon the foundation laid by the Association since its establishment in 1963. The organization was founded with the objective of fostering fraternal relations and promoting cultural understanding between the Algerian and French people.

Signaling a willingness to mediate, Royal’s comments suggest a readiness to play a role in bridging the divide between the two countries. This follows a period of strained relations that began in July 2024, after French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan regarding Western Sahara, a territory whose status remains unresolved under international law.

The 72-year-old politician is highly regarded within Algerian political circles, largely due to her consistent support for bilateral relations and her outspoken criticism of far-right and neo-conservative elements in France, particularly their hostile rhetoric towards Algeria. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune previously acknowledged Royal’s potential as a mediator in an interview earlier this year, highlighting her suitability to help restore normalcy to the relationship.

Royal, who was the Socialist candidate in the 2007 French presidential election, had previously expressed her willingness to contribute to mediation efforts, especially following heightened antagonism from the French far-right towards Algeria.

Several outstanding issues continue to weigh on Franco-Algerian relations. These include historical memory, freedom of movement, and trade imbalances. Algeria is seeking increased investment and greater access to European markets for its products, while France is focused on achieving rapid commercial gains.
