Senate President Outlines Legislative Agenda for January 2026

Algiers – Senate President Azzouz Nasseri presided over an expanded meeting of the Senate Bureau today, focusing on the legislative agenda for the period between January 13th and January 22nd, 2026. The meeting, which included parliamentary group leaders and the parliamentary observer, centered on key legislative priorities.

According to a statement released by the Senate, the agenda will encompass the review and debate of five draft laws, as well as addressing pending oral and written questions submitted to the Bureau. Furthermore, the session will formally recognize a new member appointed to the Senate under the presidential quota.

During the meeting, it was decided to refer two draft laws to the Committee on Legal and Administrative Affairs, Human Rights, Local Government, Regional Planning, and Territorial Division. These include the organic law pertaining to the fundamental law of the judiciary and the law amending and supplementing Order No. 70-86 of December 15, 1970, concerning Algerian nationality law. Additionally, the draft law criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria has been referred to the National Defense Committee.

Two further draft laws have been assigned to the Committee on Equipment and Local Development: the draft law on traffic regulations and the draft law defining the general rules relating to trust services for electronic transactions and electronic identification. These committees are tasked with preparing reports on these critical pieces of legislation.

The Senate’s schedule will resume with public sittings on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026. The five draft laws mentioned above will be put to a vote during a plenary session scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, January 21st, 2026.

Regarding the oral and written questions, the Senate Bureau reviewed ten new oral questions and five new written questions recently submitted. It was decided that these questions would be forwarded to the government for verification of compliance with the required formalities.

Finally, the file concerning the accreditation of Abdel Nasser Hammoud, the new member appointed by the President of the Republic to the Senate under the presidential quota, has been referred to the Committee on Legal and Administrative Affairs, Human Rights, Local Government, Regional Planning, and Territorial Division. The committee will prepare a report on the accreditation, which will then be presented to the Senate members for approval during the upcoming plenary session.
