Algeria Boosts Corn Imports to Stabilize Livestock Feed Market

Algiers, December 29, 2025 – The Algerian government is taking decisive action to ensure the stability of the livestock feed market by importing significant additional quantities of corn. The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries has announced that the National Office for Livestock Feed and Poultry Production (ONAB SPA) will import 1.15 million tons of corn between December 28, 2025, and February 2026.

According to a statement released by the ministry, this strategic move aims to bolster market supply, address the current high demand for corn, and adequately cover national needs in the coming months. The imports will be implemented according to the following schedule:

  • An initial shipment of 250,000 tons of corn will arrive between December 28, 2025, and January 1, 2026, through the ports of Oran, Algiers, Skikda, and Bejaia.
  • An additional 500,000 tons are expected to arrive during January 2026.
  • A final supplementary quantity of 400,000 tons is scheduled for import in February 2026.

The Ministry has reassured industry professionals, particularly those in the poultry sector, that the national market has sufficient corn supplies. This includes already imported quantities, shipments currently in transit, and those planned for the near future.

To prevent recurring supply issues experienced in previous years, the government has also decided to establish a strategic reserve of corn to avoid any future supply disruptions. The Ministry urged all stakeholders in the sector to adopt consistent supply practices and exercise collective responsibility to maintain market equilibrium. They emphasized that all resources are being mobilized to continuously monitor the corn supply and meet the national market’s needs for this essential raw material, which constitutes 80% of poultry feed. The government is committed to ensuring a stable and reliable supply of corn for the Algerian agricultural sector.
