Algeria to Import 1.15 Million Tons of Corn to Stabilize Feed Market

Algiers – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced plans to import 1.15 million tons of corn in an effort to stabilize the animal feed market and support the poultry industry. This decision follows recent concerns regarding supply shortages.

The Ministry stated that these measures were expedited after a meeting between the Minister and representatives of the poultry sector. The meeting highlighted the increasing demand for corn, a crucial component in animal feed production.

The National Office for Livestock Feed and Poultry Production (ONAB SPA) will oversee the import of the corn, scheduled to arrive between December 28, 2025, and February 2026. The program aims to address the immediate needs of the market and ensure a consistent supply of feed for livestock.

According to the schedule, 250,000 tons of corn are expected to arrive between December 28, 2025, and January 1, 2026, at the ports of Oran, Algiers, Skikda, and Bejaia. This initial shipment is intended to quickly replenish existing stocks.

An additional 500,000 tons are slated for arrival in January 2026, followed by 400,000 tons in February 2026, ensuring sufficient coverage of national demand for the coming months. The Ministry has assured industry professionals, particularly those in the poultry sector, that the imported volumes, combined with ongoing shipments, will guarantee the availability of corn and market stability.

Furthermore, in response to recurring supply disruptions, the Ministry has decided to establish a strategic reserve of corn to prevent future imbalances and ensure sustainable supply. This buffer stock aims to mitigate the impact of potential shortages and safeguard the interests of livestock farmers and consumers alike.
