Algiers – Algeria has called for immediate and concerted African action to address the escalating crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The appeal was made during a ministerial meeting of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, held virtually to discuss the deteriorating security and political situation in the region.
Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, participated in the meeting, emphasizing the urgency of the situation amid rising tensions and continued humanitarian suffering. Discussions focused on strengthening the AU’s role in supporting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
In his address, Minister Attaf stressed the need for African efforts to prioritize three key areas: firstly, the effective implementation and consolidation of a ceasefire; secondly, the intensification of political and diplomatic efforts between all parties involved; and thirdly, addressing the root causes of the conflict.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of revitalizing existing African mechanisms designed to contribute to a lasting political solution. He emphasized that African involvement should complement and align with recent international efforts, particularly the Washington and Doha agreements.
Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting a comprehensive African-led solution to the crisis in eastern DRC. This solution, he stated, must be based on inclusive dialogue, respect for national sovereignty, and strict adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the AU’s Constitutive Act, ultimately serving the security and stability of the continent.
