Russia Claims Foiled Drone Attack on Putin’s Residence, Vows Retaliation

Moscow has accused Ukraine of launching a large-scale drone attack targeting an official residence of President Vladimir Putin. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the alleged attack involved dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles and occurred early Monday morning.

Russian state news agency TASS quoted Lavrov as stating that Kyiv resorted to what he termed “state terrorism.” He claimed the attack did not result in any casualties, injuries, or damage, with all drones reportedly intercepted and destroyed.

Lavrov further elaborated that the purported attempt to strike the presidential residence in the Novgorod region involved 91 drones. He asserted that while Russia would not withdraw from negotiations regarding Ukraine, it would reconsider its approach, taking into account what he described as the Kyiv regime’s shift towards a policy of “state terrorism.”

“Russia will respond to the attack,” Lavrov stated, adding that targets and timing for a Russian response had been determined following the alleged attempt to target President Putin’s residence.

DZWatch has not independently verified these claims.

Former US President Donald Trump commented on the incident, stating that the attack on one of Putin’s residences “is not good.” This statement came a day after Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Miami to discuss the US peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

In May 2023, the Kremlin reported a drone attack on the Kremlin complex in Moscow, stating that Putin was at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow at the time. Russian authorities at the time considered the attack an assassination attempt on Putin.

Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, demanding that Kyiv abandon its aspirations to join Western military alliances, which Kyiv views as interference in its affairs. The conflict continues to escalate tensions in the region.
