Algeria has concluded its non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council, departing with a strong conviction that it has steadfastly defended the principles underpinning its foreign policy. Chief among these principles are the unwavering support for just causes and the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.
This sentiment was expressed by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, during a Security Council session dedicated to addressing threats to international peace and security. He emphasized that Algeria leaves the Council having fulfilled its commitments completely, playing the role dictated by its moral and political responsibility.
Bendjama clarified that discussions within the Council encompassed recent developments in Palestine, as well as the situation in the Somaliland region. He affirmed Algeria’s position that Somaliland is an integral part of the Somali state, reiterating its commitment to the principle of respecting the unity and sovereignty of nations.
The Algerian diplomat also lauded the coordination within the “A3” group, praising the collective efforts of African nations within the Security Council. He further expressed appreciation for countries, even those outside the African continent, that remained dedicated to defending African issues during their membership, specifically mentioning the representative of Guyana.
Bendjama concluded by affirming that Algeria departs the Security Council with the assurance that it has fully discharged its duties and remained true to its principled stances on the issues brought before the Council.
It is worth noting that Algeria held a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2024–2025 term, its fourth such membership in history, following its election in June 2023 with a resounding majority of 184 votes out of 193. It officially commenced its duties on January 1, 2024.
