Yemen: Escalation in Hadramaut and Al Mahra Reaches Boiling Point

DZWatch has learned that tensions in the Yemeni governorates of Hadramaut and Al Mahra have reached a critical juncture, culminating in recent dramatic developments. These events follow a period of escalating unrest that began in 2023, threatening to further destabilize the already fragile region.

President of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, Rashad al-Alimi, reportedly issued a demand on Tuesday for all Emirati forces to withdraw from Yemeni territory within 24 hours. Simultaneously, al-Alimi announced a state of emergency across the Republic, effective immediately for a period of 90 days. These pronouncements underscore the severity of the situation.

Further escalating the conflict, coalition forces supporting the legitimate government in Yemen reportedly conducted airstrikes targeting weapons and armored vehicles at the port of Mukalla in Hadramaut governorate. These shipments allegedly arrived aboard two vessels originating from Fujairah.

The current crisis is the culmination of a power struggle between the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which seeks the secession of southern and eastern Yemen to form an independent state including Hadramaut, and the Hadramaut Tribal Alliance, which advocates for regional autonomy within a unified Yemen. The STC has reportedly seized control of both Hadramaut and Al Mahra following days of intense clashes.

DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available. The implications of this escalation for the broader region remain uncertain, but the potential for further conflict is significant. The international community is urged to prioritize de-escalation and facilitate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
