Algiers – Concerns are mounting over the fitness of key Algerian player Mohamed Amoura following the Desert Foxes’ match against Burkina Faso. Reports indicate that Amoura is struggling with a recurring shoulder injury.
DZWatch has learned that Amoura’s shoulder issue is not new, with the player reportedly managing the injury for the past two years. Despite the discomfort, Amoura was determined to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hoping the injury wouldn’t be severe enough to sideline him. Sources close to the national team suggest he will undergo a period of rest, with the aim of being fit for a potential Round of 16 clash.
Meanwhile, discussions have emerged regarding potential replacements for injured players Hicham Boudaoui and Fares Chaibi. However, according to CAF and FIFA regulations, replacements are generally not permitted after the start of the tournament. Claims that Morocco replaced Romain Saïss are inaccurate as Saïss remains in the squad.
In more positive news, Rayan Aït-Nouri has been named in the Team of the Round for the second matchday of AFCON, following in the footsteps of captain Riyad Mahrez, who featured in the Team of the Round for the first matchday. Aït-Nouri’s impressive performance earned him a high rating. Both Aït-Nouri and Mahrez were also awarded Man of the Match in their respective games against Sudan and Burkina Faso.
Looking ahead, national team coach Vladimir Petkovic has indicated that he intends to field a largely second-string side in the upcoming match against Mauritania, having already secured qualification to the knockout stages.
