President Tebboune Acknowledges Shortcomings in Meat Production

Algiers, December 30, 2025 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune addressed the nation today, acknowledging the country’s successes across various sectors while openly admitting a significant shortfall in domestic meat production. Speaking before a joint session of Parliament at the Palais des Nations, President Tebboune called upon those involved in the agricultural sector to intensify efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in meat production.

“We have achieved considerable successes,” the President stated, “but I must confess our failure to adequately produce meat of all kinds. This raises serious questions.” He emphasized the need for a concerted effort to address this deficiency, highlighting the economic implications of relying on imports.

“This is a call to those in the sector to act in the best interest of their country,” President Tebboune urged. “The funds spent on importing meat would be better invested within Algeria, benefiting its citizens.” He expressed confidence that with focused dedication, the challenges in meat production could be overcome.

President Tebboune also praised the initiatives undertaken by farmers, particularly their success in establishing 15,000 agricultural enterprises independently of the Ministry of Agriculture. He noted their positive impact on the national economy, emphasizing the increasing integration of technology within the agricultural sector. “These initiatives are significantly contributing to the national economy,” the President added, highlighting the importance of empowering local farmers and fostering innovation in agricultural practices.

The President’s address underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering domestic food production and reducing reliance on imports. The focus on meat production reflects a strategic priority aimed at enhancing food security and strengthening the national economy.
