ALGIERS – In a move aimed at bolstering water security in the southern regions, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has instructed Prime Minister Sifi Ghrib to initiate the construction of water plants in Tindouf and Tamanrasset.
The directive was issued during President Tebboune’s address to the nation before a joint session of Parliament at the Palais des Nations in Algiers. The President stated, “I now order the Prime Minister to commence the construction of water plants in Tindouf and Tamanrasset.”
This decision seeks to alleviate the challenges faced by residents in accessing potable water and to secure the water needs of the population and agricultural activities in the far south. The projects are considered ‘structural initiatives’ designed to eliminate inconsistencies in water distribution and connect border regions to modern water infrastructure.
The presidential order underscores the Algerian state’s commitment to reducing developmental disparities and ensuring water provision for citizens is a priority, especially in light of current climate challenges. The government views reliable access to water as a critical necessity for the well-being of its citizens and the stability of the region.
These projects are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents in the southern provinces and contribute to the overall development of the region.
