Recent events in Yemen point to a potential escalation of the ongoing crisis, with reports of clashes between forces loyal to the legitimate government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the eastern governorate of Hadramaut. The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch is closely monitoring developments.
Earlier today, the Governor of Hadramaut, Salem al-Khanbashi, announced the launch of an operation to peacefully take over military sites from STC forces. This announcement followed hours of heightened tensions between the two sides. There have been accusations directed towards STC leader Aidaroos al-Zubaidi, alleging a refusal to de-escalate tensions and withdraw from Hadramaut.
Adding to the complexity, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, recently appointed al-Khanbashi as the commander of the Homeland Shield forces in Hadramaut. This appointment grants al-Khanbashi full military, security, and administrative powers aimed at restoring security and order within the governorate.
Following his appointment, al-Khanbashi emphasized that the operation to take over military sites was not a declaration of war or an escalation. He framed it as a preventive measure to safeguard security and prevent chaos. According to al-Khanbashi, the operation specifically targets military camps and locations, and does not target civilians or political entities.
Al-Khanbashi appealed to Hadramaut’s tribal leaders, dignitaries, and societal forces to fulfill their national and historical role. He stressed that Hadramaut has always been a land of peace and wisdom and will not be allowed to descend into chaos or be used as a bargaining chip. State media reported that Homeland Shield forces had taken control of military checkpoints surrounding the 37th Brigade headquarters in Al-Khashaa, Wadi Hadramaut. Videos depicting the launch of the operation have also been released.
Reports have emerged indicating shelling and clashes. DZWatch continues to gather information to provide a comprehensive understanding of the situation as it unfolds. This is a developing story.
